My guest for this episode is Rob Hopkins the creator of the idea of Transition Towns, a way for us to move from oil dependency to local resilience. That lead to his writing The Transition Handbook, something every permaculture practitioner should have in their library and which serves as a good introduction, along with Toby Hemenway’s The Permaculture City, to look at how we can move from the landscape to the people space.

Find out more about Rob and his work at and the other resources below.

If you are interested in starting your own transition town or want more information on the movement, let me know.

First I must thank you for this and all episodes!

It was asked that if we knew of university teaching permaculture to leave a comment: one school that is teaching permaculture is Oregon State University, Andrew Millison teaches it and he also happens to have a chicken integrated greenhouse, which grows citrus here in Oregon!

        Hi Annie,

I’m familiar with Andrew’s work, as I took my teacher training with him, and some other programs that offer a PDC for college credit. What I am interested in, at the university level, is a regionally accredited Associates or Bachelors in Permaculture in the United States. The degree in Permaculture from Gaia University doesn’t count for my criteria because it is not regionally accredited, which is the requirement for an “accredited” degree when asked for such on a job application, such as a requirement for a municipal or government job.

Do you have pictures of Andrew’s integrated greenhouse?
