The question of what someone can do to start using Permaculture came up in a recent seminar and the answer is simple: Start a garden! It is an easy way to begin applying the ethics and examining the principles while also growing your own food.

As not everyone can grow a garden, for various reasons, that is also addressed: start buying from local farmers. You can learn about your food, keep money in the local economy, and begin building community.

Any questions?  Send me an email: show@thepermaculturepodcast.com

If you are not familiar with gardening and need some places to start, these are the books I recommend.

Square Foot Gardening
Gardening When It Counts
Rodale’s Ultimate Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening

Popular book on container gardening. I do not have direct experience with them:
Grow Great Grub: Organic Food from Small Spaces
McGee & Stuckey’s Bountiful Container
Succulent Container Gardens

While giving a “What Is Permaculture?” lecture recently one of the audience members asked me “Why do you do this?”. This episode stems from that question. Though not a long show, even for my short standards, it is an expression of my passion for this work and why I find it important.

ERS/USDA Food Consumer Price Index for 2007

The table in the following link shows how much, as measured by percentage of disposable income, the average citizen from various nations spends on food consumed at home. It bring clarity to many of the situations currently occurring in the world at large but also reflects how easily it could happen elsewhere if there were to be a spike in the price of food in those countries.
